The more these mental models match the user’s existing mental models, the faster and easier the user can use the new website or application.
A good example of Jacob’s Law is the design of a shopping cart on an e-commerce website. Most users already have experience using a shopping cart on other e-commerce websites and therefore already have a mental model of how this feature should work. If the shopping cart on a new e-commerce website matches the user’s mental model, the user will be able to use and understand this feature more quickly.
Jacob’s law applies not only to the design of individual features, but also to the overall design of the website or application. A user already has mental models of how websites and applications are designed and navigation patterns. If a website or application has a unique design that deviates from these mental models, it can lead to user confusion and frustration. Therefore, it is important to consider users’ existing mental models when designing a new website or application.
Jacob’s Law is also often used in conjunction with other UX principles, such as Fitts’ Law, Hick’s Law, and Miller’s Law. For example, Fitts’ Law states that the time it takes to reach a target depends on the distance to the target and the size of the target. If a designer takes this law into account when placing buttons and links on a website or application, it can improve the user experience.
Hick’s Law states that a user’s response time increases with the number of choices available. If a website or application offers too many options, it can degrade the user experience and lead to choice paralysis. By taking Hick’s law into account and limiting the number of options on the website or application, the user experience can be improved.
